What Does Yoga mean?

The word yoga comes from “yoke” which means union in sanskrit. You may ask with what we are trying to union with? Well, the answer is union with God. Although the aim of common yoga practices today is far away from the authentic intention, one of the earliest, and considered the most trusted source, Patanjali’s “Yoga Sutra”, explains it in a very detailed way how one can gradually work to remove the illusory image of self by using various yogic methods. Today though, Yoga is considered as a practice for well being of the mind and body.

Why do we say “Namaste” in Yoga?

This is a very basic salutation that practically means “I honor the place in you (as a soul)”

What are the most common types of Yoga that are being practiced today?

To name a few that are practiced today: Hatha, Ashtanga, Vinyasa, Dharma, Iyengar, Power and so on.

What are the benefits of yoga?

Yoga essentially works and opens the energy channels of the subtle body which improves your well-being. On the physical plan, it works on all the body muscles, joints, and ligaments through a variety of poses. As a result of an authentic yoga practice, yoga gives the practitioner a healthier body, improved posture, and a relaxed mind which eventually brings more balanced energy flow within the body.

How is Yoga helpful to get a good posture?

Through the poses we practice, you develop an awareness of muscles and overall your body.  We also go through posture basics in sessions to make sure you have a strong understanding of a good posture and how it can be achieved. With this body awareness, you would be able to improve your posture even when you are on your own. I’m grateful for the fact that I helped a lot of my students to improve their posture and alleviate pain associated with habitual bad posture.

Which yoga is best for beginners?

This is a question of preference. There are many styles of yoga practiced today and it may not be very clear which one is the most suitable for what you want and also works with your personality. Consider you’ve never listened to music before and you are trying to know what genre(s) you would enjoy the most. Because you don’t know what Jazz, Classical music, Rock, and hip hop is about, those names don’t make sense to you. But If you can get help from a professional musician with years of experience in listening to numerous genres, he can get your taste of music rather very quickly and suggests the genres, bands, and artists that you may really enjoy. Your yoga practice is not any different. If you don’t know where to start then you basically have two options:

1) Start practicing different genres of Yoga one by one and see which one(s) you like the most. Although this is a great way to know it, it may take literally months of practice to have some answers.

2) Go to someone who can help you find out the style(s) that work with your taste.

Who should not do yoga?

When practiced one-on-one, anyone can do yoga. I’m here to walk you through the very basics of poses and how to get in and out of poses. Even with conditions, Yoga is a very helpful tool that allows practitioners to feel better and rejuvenated.

What should I know about yoga?

If you plan on joining a group yoga class, it’s best that you have your foundation since participants know the basics of Yoga. Instructors usually don’t go through explaining the basics.  If you are interested in one-on-one sessions though, you literally don’t have to know anything about yoga since the teacher is going to help you with everything along the way.

What kind of classes are available?

I offer three types of classes:

Yoga for Beginners,
Yoga for Better Posture,
Yoga for Relaxation.

Everybody is unique and their needs are different. Years of experience have shown me that finding the right pace and including the poses that the student enjoys the most is crucial for their progress. Think about how quickly you make progress on something you love. I design a practice to accommodate your needs while keeping the practice fun.

Do you host classes outside? Zoom classes? Group classes?

Outdoor sessions are a great way of practicing Yoga and I offer outdoor sessions as I prefer them over indoor sessions. I also offer Zoom sessions if you live far away or would like to have corporate work sessions where participants are not necessarily present at the same place. Group classes are another alternative which can be practiced indoors or outside.

I’m very busy, can you come to my place for practice?

Yes. One of the top benefits of having one-on-one sessions is to make the sessions work with your busy schedule. I make sure to find the best time that works for you.

How long are the sessions and how do we start?

Sessions are usually an hour long and we start with an assessment session. We start off by determining where you are in terms of flexibility, strength and continue with getting your taste of practice and personal goals. We will have a roadmap for your goals at the end of the assessment session.
